| Mobile number portability (MNP) delayed again, Oct 31 is new deadline | |
Mobile number portability (MNP) will now be introduced in India by Oct. 31, thus delaying for users for the third time.
Mobile users will be allowed to use the same mobile number even if providers use different mobile technologies like CDMA (code division multiple access) or GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications).
The MNP service was originally scheduled to be offered on Dec. 31 last year, starting with four large cities and some key service areas. It was postponed to March 31, and later to June 30, though the scope of the rollout of MNP was by then extended to cover the entire country at one go.
Despite repeated extension of deadlines over the past one year, so far only 14 per cent of the mobile networks across the country are ready for the introduction of MNP. On an all India basis, only about 14 per cent testing has been completed and 36 per cent is in progress. In 50 per cent of the networks, testing is yet to be done.
The country had 617.5 million mobile subscribers as of May 31, according to TRAI.
